Alta Badia, a land to discover

During your holidays in Corvara in Alta Badia you will get in touch with this wonderful piece of paradise. Already on your arrival you will find yourself admiring the beauty of this place: thick forests, flowering meadows, rushing streams, and the unmistakable peaks of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage. UNESCO is an organisation of the United Nations with the aim of protecting and preserving cultural and natural assets of outstanding universal value.

Alta Badia has preserved its ancient charm and authenticity even in the language Ladin. The result of a mixture of Rhaetian and Latin with Celtic influences, Ladin is one of the oldest languages of the Dolomites, born at the time of the Roman conquest of the Alps. Following the invasion of the Bavarians and Langobards, Ladin was almost wiped out and maintained in only a few inland valleys. Recognised today as a regional language in its own right, Ladin is taught at school and is featured in books and magazines. The "Micurá de Rü" Ladin Institute, which organises initiatives to support the Ladin language and culture, contributes to its preservation and promotion.

The Ladins have not only kept their language intact, but also their customs and traditions – ranging from country festivities to gastronomic customs, from typical folk dances to religious rituals. An important element of Ladin culture is, for example, the traditional costume, the guant de zacan: handed down from generation to generation, it is worn as a sign of identity and belonging on festive, civil, and religious occasions. Alta Badia's most distinguishing feature remains nature: besides being surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Dolomites, it also has several nature parks such as Puez-Odle and Fanes-Senes-Braies, which preserve an extraordinary flora and fauna.
